Cover photo info
- Photo title: Ortman Shumate House San Francisco 4
- Author: Peachpappa
- Cover photo description:
- John Ortman was a German immigrant to San Francisco in 1851, and started out as a grocery store clerk, ultimately becoming the owner of a successful grocery store himself. By 1890, he owned the entire block along Scott Street between California and Pine, so besides having built a home for himself, he also had homes built for his two daughters. Of those three, only this one remains, built in 1870. Dr Albert Shumate, President of the California Historic Society and first President of the San Francisco Landmarks Advisory Board, lived here himself in 1977 when it became a San Francisco Landmark. As seen 28 November 2022.
