  • Cover photo description:
  • William Talbot was born in Maine in 1816, and joined his father Peter in his Lumber and shipping company. When the gold rush hit San Francisco, young William left, with a load of quality lumber, in 1850 for San Francisco. William established his own lumber company, with woods from South America and Hawaii. William, now established in San Francisco, had his own family here. Having a daughter, Mary, who became engaged to Henry Dutton, William had this Italianate Townhouse built as a wedding present for the young couple in 1876. Ever the lumber man, William used quality Redwoods from Washington and other imported, rare woods from South America. The location of this home on Pacific at Franklyn was very fortunate. The fire that was caused by the Earthquake of 1906, and destroyed most of downtown, stopped at Van Ness Avenue, just one block away. The home has changed hands over the ensuing decades, which caused some off period changes. Fortunately, the current owners brought it back to the original looks, from old original family photographs. One of the unique features of this house, looking at it from just the Pacific Avenue side, it looks like just a two story house. From the Franklyn Street side, you realize that, due to the slope of the street, it really is a three floor house. As seen 7 December 2022.
