- Cover photo description:
- Originally part of a village of the native Yelamu People, what is today Mission Dolores Park was originally a cemetery for the two oldest Jewish Synagogues in the city, going back to the Gold Rush. With a lot of encouragement from the surrounding property owners, the city bought the no longer active two plots of land in 1905. Originally called just Mission Park, because of the nearby Mission, the oldest building in San Francisco,it officially became Mission Dolores Park in 2016,in part because the Mission itself is called Mission Dolores,in honor of Dolores Creek which used to run near there. In addition to a children's play area, tennis and basketball courts, there are off leash dog run areas. There Is also a very prominent statue of Miguel Hidalgo, the Catholic Priest who is recognized as the Liberator of Mexico. Straight across from the statue is an exact replica of the bell he personally rang, for Mexican Independence. In the immediate aftermath of the 1906 Earthquake and fire, many of the near by residence had to live here, some having to stay for two years. As seen 23 March 2023.
