- Cover photo description:
- Dmitrov is very nice city near Moscow. In the historical centre of the city rises the grand five-dome Uspensky Cathedral built in the early 16th century. It is considered the city’s main monument by location, strategic importance and architectural design. The Cathedral was built in 1509-1533 replacing the old church that was there since the city foundation. It was rebuilt during 17th-19th centuries. Arkhangelsky Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin served prototype model for it, however Uspensky Cathedral outstands it in monumentality and abundance of traditional Russian details. The surprisingly well-proportioned building is at the same time rather modestly decorated. Its blind arches covering is substituted with pyramidal, and the double-level open galleries, making the building especially beautiful, were reconstructed in a pseudo gothic manner.
