  • This building started out in the 19th century as the principal mansion on a ranch owned by the wealthy Burdell family, Northern California pioneers, Much later it was briefly owned and occupied by the Grateful Dead rock group, and they and other rock stars gathered and played concerts in front of the mansion. Today the mile-square ranch is known as Olompali State Historic Park, owned by the state of California. The mansion and other ranch buildings are boarded up, and visitors are warned not to enter because of the danger of collapse.
