  • This is a five gallon milk can used to store and transport milk beginning in Europe in the 1860`s. A large draw back was no insulation and it was hard to keep the milk cool. Also, they were not easy to wash. In 1884 people began using glass bottles. It was much easier to keep milk cool. Since they were easier to sanitize, they were much safer. Today milk cans are sold as antiques and used for home decor.
